Is it me, or are people confusing dark launching and canary releases?
Dark Launching, as originally described by Facebook back in 2008, relates to rolling out functionality in such a way that it is totally hidden from users. facebook.com/note.php?note_…
Later, @jezhumble talks about Dark Launching as being a great way of decoupling deployment of functionality from release of that functionality to your users informit.com/articles/artic… (2012)
Canary Releasing is about releasing new functionality to a subset of your users. The distinction between that and dark launching is that dark launching doesn’t make this new functionality in any way “visible” to your users.
And yet most recent descriptions of dark launching aren’t describing dark launching at all - they’re talking about canary releasing. You might want to use both, but they serve different purposes.
Of course, Dark Launching, Canary Releasing, A/B and multivariant testing are all discrete (and useful) patterns under the banner of Progressive Delivery : redmonk.com/jgovernor/2018… cc @monkchips
