NOW: Tonight in census citizenship question litigation news — DOJ announces that a new team of lawyers will be taking over the cases, doesn't give a reason or specify who exactly is stepping in (we'll find in new filings tomorrow)
Recall the memorable comments from the career DOJ lawyer in the Maryland case last week, in which he essentially said he had no idea what was going on once Trump started tweeting
Per a DOJ official (declined to be ID'd), the new team in the census litigation will include a mix of political appointees and career lawyers, drawing more from the Consumer Protection Branch, as opposed to Federal Programs. Official declined to get into the *why*
Also per the DOJ official, the move away from the Federal Programs Branch means it'll no longer be overseen by the head of that branch, James Burnham. Official declined to say who would be taking over his role
A bit more on the shakeup at DOJ in the census litigation, from a senior DOJ official on background: "James Burnham had no objection to handling these cases going forward, but also thought it made sense to have a new team at this stage in the litigation."
Recap of where things stand after the holiday weekend:
- Census Bureau is going ahead with printing the 2020 form *without* the citizenship Q
- Trump admin is still deciding if it can get the Q in and survive another round of court review
- New DOJ lawyers are subbing in
