If you are wondering who to believe over tonight’s Panorama, this email from Jennie Formby, Labour’s General Secretary, is a particularly revealing bit of evidence. If you are going by the book, you don’t “delete all traces” of an email bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politi…
Whilst watching tonight’s Panorama, which will apparently focus on Labour’s processes for dealing with antisemitism, it is worth bearing in mind the widely accepted definition of institutional racism
And you might ask the question: for a person experiencing racism who brings a complaint to the Labour Party:
- will they experience an “appropriate level of professional service”
- can racism be detected in the “processes, attitudes and behaviour” of the organisation?
All of the conduct of the party staff and officials must be judged in that context. Is it appropriate and professional?

Or have factional loyalties become more important than fighting racism in a party which historically led on anti-racism?
And remember, disciplinary processes are only a part of the culture of an institution. They by definition occur after the event. The racism has already occurred, this is about punishment, deterrence and if there is a positive culture, perhaps rehabilitation.
The mistake people make is only questioning if actions of Labour Party officials are ‘antisemitic’ (eg directly discriminating against Jews). Question is also if they are facilitating an antisemitic culture. This’s why so many ‘left’ labour people are confused on Chris Williamson
