I got a lot of pushback to this tweet, mostly taking the form “why not both?”

And I gotta say I find that really unsatisfying and unhelpful.
If you want to address or solve a problem, you need a useful and accurate problem definition.

Saying “climate change is a result of everything” is not completely inaccurate, but it is extremely unhelpful.
I’m sorry but climate change as corporate conspiracy and climate change as widespread human failing cannot be equally true.

@ramez It’s true that Germany’s Energiewende played a key role in the recent drop in solar/wind prices, and to that end, the enormous costs of that program have far broader global benefits than many of its critics acknowledge. 2/
@ramez I’m not sure I’d give Germany proportionally more weight than China and the United States, but it’s definitely a global leader in deployment. 3/

Nuclear maintenance would literally be a 100,000 year project with almost no room for error--sorry but I'd rather have a ten year replacement schedule for solar panels, lmao.
Even for so called clean nuclear fusion, the plastics produced by seawater extraction would choke the ocean with plastic is under a decade--and that's assuming clean fusion is possible, and not, y'know, on a 50 year rollout schedule from the present day.
It would take building one solar panel a day for 50 years to compensate for current energy use. It takes 5 years to build a nuclear power plant, this means, on average, 1825 need to be under construction during a year at any given time FOR FIFTY YEARS.

I was about to head offline for 2 weeks, but I need to respond to this new paper from @ppchef before I go on whether #nuclear can operate flexibly. By coincidence, I just had a peer-reviewed article on this very subject accepted by Applied Energy by today! So here's a thread...
In this new "discussion paper," energy journalist @PPchef takes great pains to demonstrate that nuclear power is too inflexible to pair well with wind & solar in a "decarbonized energy system" & thus must be discarded "to make room" for more #wind & #solar publications.iass-potsdam.de/pubman/item/es…
I'm going to defer technical discussion of whether nuclear plants (old and new) can ramp or change output to match fluctuations in net demand and contribute to system reliability/flexibility until my paper is released (short answer: they certainly can if doing so is valuable)...

Im seeing more discussion on possibility of using (smaller) #nuclear reactors to generate heat (instead of electricity) to eventually help decarbonize district heating (& cooling via evap. chillers), industrial process heat, etc. I've wondered: what are the economics? #thread 👇
Heat is much less valuable then electricity. Then again, a nuclear plant is a great heater! Only about 33% of heat generated by a reactor is converted to electricity. So would it be worth it to produce heat instead of power?
There are 3412 Btus per kWh of electricity. So 1 MMBtu = 293 kWh. One kWh wholesale electricity sells for say 3-6 cents. So that's about $8.80-17.60 per MMBtu of electricity sold.

Six #nuclear reactors closed since 2013. By my count, up to 23 more reactors may retire w/o policy or market conditions improving: 21.6 GW = ~1/5th of US fleet, 4% of US #electricity--and crucially, 12% of emissions-free generation.
