The line that immigrants are more patriotic than the native-born is nothing new. It's been deployed as a guilt trip forever, a minor chord in the Left's great symphony of American inferiority.
If we don't value our citizenship, the thinking goes, then who are we to deny it to anyone who wants it? We're hypocrites for treating something we take for granted as though it were a priceless treasure.
An aggressive campaign to devalue American citizenship among young people, both native-born and immigrants, has been underway for decades. Who could be surprised if too many young Americans treat citizenship like a genetic disease instead of a treasured inheritance?
Who could be surprised that legal immigrants obliged to study American civics might score better than the poorly-educated products of the U.S. education system, who primarily remember endless lectures about the evils of their nation's founding?
The Left is very aggressive and highly accomplished at devaluing whatever they wish to take away from Americans, very much including citizenship. If there is no such thing as a non-citizen, then there is no such thing as a citizen. That's OPENLY where Democrats are heading.
You'd like to think immigrants would be enormously grateful to the country that took them in and at least somewhat critical of what they left behind. Many are, of course, but not all of them. We no longer do much to teach them gratitude or encourage assimilation.
All of the energy in our dominant culture runs in the opposite direction, in fact. Consider another insipid and widespread talking point: "America is a nation of immigrants."
The truth is that legal immigrants are citizens of the United States, with all of the honor AND responsibility that entails. We should all be taught about the honor and the responsibilities and reminded of them every day, but the opposite happens.
With every ounce of its political and cultural power, the Left tells is there is NO DIFFERENCE AT ALL between legal immigrants and illegal aliens. The legal immigrant is told a thousand times over that he has more in common with the illegal than his fellow American citizens.
We're not even allowed to verbally distinguish between them anymore. Phrases like "illegal alien" are forbidden, replaced by increasingly absurd euphemisms. Democrats insist the word "immigrant" describes legal and illegal alike, without distinction.
There is no distinction between true asylum seekers - people fleeing real persecution - and economic migrants. The persecuted are far more likely to embrace a new American identity with relief and gratitude. Economic migrants don't necessarily even plan to stay here permanently.
Economic migrants aren't told there is anything particularly wrong with the nation or system they came from. They're more likely to be told its poverty and lack of opportunity are somehow the fault of Americans. They're told we have the worst, most unjust society on Earth.
If you're an outspokenly patriotic American, you're jingoistic and chauvinistic. Putting your country first is crude "nationalism." Taking citizenship seriously is "xenophobia." Enlightenment means regarding other countries as superior and even borrowing their laws.
One of our major parties, the Democrat Party, openly states that the needs of foreign nationals must come first, and only racist xenophobes would disagree. They regard the idea of American politicians looking out for Americans first as unspeakably nativist and primitive.
If Americans - all of us, from families that have lived here for centuries to the legal immigrant sworn in last week - rediscover the true value of citizenship, Democrats are utterly doomed and they know it. They'll fight like mad to keep that from happening. /end
