A thread here on Steve Bruce, what it means for Sheffield Wednesday and why, however this is spun in his and/or Newcastle's favour in the national media, his actions could have ruined the season before it's begun. #swfc #nufc
By leaving Wednesday, Steve Bruce has chosen to give up one of the safest jobs in the league. He had the unanimous support of the fan base, and of the club's owner. But he's a "local lad from Newcastle", so he had no choice? #swfc #nufc
Except Bruce has said no to Newcastle twice before, and chose to manage Sunderland. Most were well aware of his "loyalty issues." But for him to jump ship after just 18 games, after the club allowed him a month to watch England in the Windies, is going to rankle. #swfc #nufc
Make no mistake. Anyone who didn't realise before that Steve Bruce only looks after Steve Bruce has got a rude awakening. Many Wednesday fans have rightly been left feeling very hurt and bitter. #swfc
The first issue: Reports (if true) that it was Steve Bruce's agent that approached Newcastle after Rafa Benitez left, and openly courted the job. Shows pretty much zero commitment to the job in hand. #swfc
The second, killer issue: That Bruce said he spoke to Newcastle out of "respect". Respect for whom? Certainly not the club that had given him a route back into the game after be was sacked by Aston Villa. #swfc #nufc
Bruce once said: "One of the reasons why I am here is due to the quite unique band of fans. If you are honest and straight with them they will support their club." He certainly wasn't that when he resigned on Monday morning. #swfc #nufc
Bruce was well aware of the FFP issues at Wednesday when he joined, and while the 'soft embargo' probably went on longer than he was expecting he was still allowed to sign three new players in that period. #swfc #nufc
Borner, Odubajo and Harris were all training with the club before signing their contracts, so it was clear they were always coming in the door. No doubt Bruce will use the embargo as a defence for his actions. #swfc #nufc
But by joining Newcastle he is going to a club, headed by Mike Ashley, which by Premier League standards is effectively working under pretty similar constraints, by choice not force. #swfc #nufc
So Bruce will go into a similar situation on Tyneside, except most of the fans are going to resent him from the off for being "Ashley's yes man". Polar opposite to what he is leaving behind. Night and day. #swfc #nufc
So what if Wednesday are reportedly going to get £4m for Bruce and his coaches. Sounds like a great deal financially, and it probably is, but the knock-on effects are so much more damaging. #swfc #nufc
Wednesday start their German tour on Thursday and play their first Championship game in just 18 days, and now they have no manager and have lost the two main first-team coaches. It's left a huge hole. #swfc #nufc
Chris Hughton has reportedly turned down the club, which leaves Wednesday scratching around for a manager from somewhere, and that man has to try and put his mark on the squad both in tactics and trust in a matter of days. #swfc #nufc
Note "the squad" and not "his squad." Because Steve Bruce has already released and signed players based around his plans for the season. Who knows what the the new manager will think of these players. #swfc #nufc
Will the new manager be experienced in English football? Or will it be another left-field foreign appointment? And will whoever comes in affect the unity of the fans after it went so wrong under Luhukay? #swfc
Bruce's defection leads to so many questions about the direction of the club, and whether the new man will have control of transfers. It's left a gaping hole with so little time to fix, and fix well. #swfc
The transfer window also closes in just over three weeks, leaving the new manager limited time to assess his squad and make signings - even if there is any space in the squad for this after Bruce signed three. #swfc
It's worth mentioning, too, that this season's Championship does not appear as strong as in some previous years. So a club which has everything in line could challenge. With Bruce, this seemed possible. Without? Who knows. #swfc
It means a summer of optimism has been pretty much thrown away, leaving doubt and uncertainty. Wednesday fans have EVERY RIGHT to be furious. No matter how it is spun by Bruce's mates in the national media. #swfc
The only bright spot is that this has unified the chairman and the fans over his stance on Bruce (even if the club are publicly not mentioning anything about this). One thing Chansiri won't allow it to be trampled over financially. #swfc
What comes next? No one has got a clue. From what seemed like a well-planned preseason with a coaching team and squad as one, Wednesday have got what they always seem to get. A preseason of utter chaos. Thanks, Steve. Enjoy your dream job (however long it lasts). #swfc #nufc
