I'm about 30% of the way in to @MZHemingway and @JCNSeverino's great new book (and #1 bestseller) JUSTICE ON TRIAL on the Kavanaugh confirmation

It's genuinely excellent: well-researched, beautifully written and gripping

One of the things I'm really enjoying is being reminded of the truly ridiculous moments from the confirmation

Like when Cory Booker was determined to break the rules even though he didn't need to

Dude literally said "I AM SPARTACUS"
Another thing I really appreciate is that it consistently gets the law - and recent legal history - right

Popular books about the law often butcher it

That's not true at all here

Of course @JCNSeverino is a former Thomas clerk so one shouldn't be surprised
The other thing - it's correct while using simple language

There is a conceit among academics and "serious" people that "serious" prose should be complicated, I absolutely hate that

Mollie and Carrie explain legal concepts and legal history simply and clearly

Identity politics is a national security threat

American universities and think tanks are awash in money from China and Qatar

And if you criticize them for it they'll paint you as racists and bigots
Hollywood is supplicating to China right now

Anyone remember the last time there was a Chinese villain in a major Hollywood movie? Never happens.

CCP will ban your movie from a massive market if it does

And invest in your movie if you'll bend the knee

Back to the universities

The CCP bans our academics from getting travel visas if they say critical things about the regime

And our universities don't care - because they are awash in Chinese money

Because they need to pay their administrators

Because of identity politics

Another book review: THE NEW ART OF WAR by @HolsteinWJ is one of the most important books of the year

Chinese espionage and IP theft is an enormous problem and Peter Thiel just scratched the surface last week

@willsommer's attempt to pretend the evidence of Ilhan Omar's crimes doesn't exist

Or @TianaTheFirst's attempt to pretend that the journalists who first reported on 98% of that evidence don't exist

I'm a sociologist who studies adolescent sexual violence. On this thread, I will be live tweeting the #Kavanaugh hearing, chiming in with sociological insights and research findings.
Full disclosure--I will probably step away for parts of it. While many conservatives have cast feminists as people who rejoice at allegations of sexual assault against powerful men, this is a painful process for us. We know survivors. We are survivors. And I will need breaks.
It does not bode well that the beginning of this hearing is starting with equating #Kavanaugh and #Ford's experiences with harassment following Dr. Ford's allegations. They are absolutely not the same.

1/ I finished @nntaleb's new #book Skin in the game, and here are my learnings, insights and notes.

Warning: this thread is going to be huge.
2/ Human systems are systems within systems, interacting in complex ways. No article / paper / logic can capture all interactions of such systems and their evolution over a non-trivial amount of time.

So fear one shot, large scale interventions (such as invasions, UBI, CRISPR)
3/ People with fuck you money should call out famous or powerful people when they are wrong
