A few techniques and tools that have helpful me stay just-enough-productive during this phase of my life where I don't have the structure of a full-time job. Thread 👇
/ ⏲ Two-week-sprints: Every other Sunday, I come up with a theme for the next two weeks, and 5-10 things I'd like to get done. I write these up and email them to a few friends. I find just sending that email makes me feel accountable -- no need for anyone to even reply.
/ 🙅‍♂️ Saying no to coffee chats: I love helping folks. However, I've found that scheduling, traveling to, and doing coffee chats sucking up my entire day, every day. I'm now either saying no, or asking for a consulting fee. It's given me back priceless time.
/ 🧠 @BrainfmApp: When I want to do "deep work", I need headphones and music. After bouncing between various Spotify playlists, I finally crumbled and bought a yearly subscription to BrainFM. I'm never looking back. Also, Jabra 85h headphones are 💯
/ 🔐 @stayfocusd: I don't know if you've heard but Twitter is addicting. This Chrome extension lets you limit how much time a day you spend on any site. I set it to 10 mins/day for Twitter and FB and Slack. If only it stopped me from opening things up in a different browser....
/ 🤝 Regularly meeting with key people: A few friends of mine are in a similar place in life (ex-founders, spent years at a large company, looking to start something new). A weekly/monthly meeting gives us a chance to share advice, explore ideas, and collaborate on projects.
