“I don’t think the [Iranian] regime is any more monolithic than our own administration,” says HPSCI chairman Adam Schiff. Says the difference of policy opinions among Iran’s leaders may create a “window of opportunity” to move forward, lower tensions. #AspenSecurity
“I had the impression the president wanted to hear from people outside his bubble,” Schiff says of meeting Trump had with congressional leaders on Iran. Says he told Trump Iran’s objective was to divide US and allies, and that “we have not authorized you to use force.”
“Barring some emergency,” Schiff tells @kwelkernbc he expects Robert Mueller to testify on Wednesday. “I fully have every expectation it will go forward.”
“I am very realistic in my expectations. He is clearly deeply replicant to testify.” Schiff says it’s Mueller’s choice not to go beyond his report. There’s no law requiring him to restrict his remarks.
Of particular interest to the committee are “the counterintelligence findings,” Schiff says. “What happened to the counterintelligence investigation,” which is not in the Mueller report.
Trump administration has been blocking this and many efforts to get more information, Schiff says. “I pine for the Bush administration.”
“We have a far better chance of the love affair in North Korea working out” than getting Mueller to say whether the president should be charged after he leaves office.
Schiff, whose committee is still investigstng Russian interference, is pretty clear he’s not going to redo Mueller’s work. “I think there is little to be gained in trying to refute the prosecutorial judgment that he made” that there was no chargeable conspiracy.
But available evidence of collusion “is damning” regardless of whether it can be charged, Schiff said, pointing to all the known interactions between Trump campaign and Russians.
Correcting earlier tweet: Schiff said Mueller is “reluctant,” not that he’s a character from Blade Runner.
Schiff says the send her back chant at Trump rally “undermines our democracy in a way that no foreign adversary could.”
