This is Gene Kranz, Chief Flight Director for the Gemini and Apollo programs. He was himself a fighter pilot and every bit the cool customer Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins were. He is still alive, and is as responsible for man's success in space as those who went there.
Kranz said the following to his people after the Apollo 1 disaster. It is something of a creed at NASA:
I have just been told that photograph of Kranz was taken today. Good for him.
