If in Ontario, and your child is diagnosed with Autism, you will need:

1. Savings. If you’re hoping to purchase the bare minimum of health care services for your child.

2. Credit. Because savings will run out in a matter of months, if not weeks.
3. Collateral. As therapy can span years. Selling a car or remortgaging a home so your child can learn basic life skills is a reality.

4. Six-figure salaries. And even this isn’t the answer; no one has an extra $80k lying around to pay for clinically recommended services.
5. Family with Money. If you’re lucky, your support system will come to the rescue to help out for a month or two.

6. Time. Because @fordnation and governments that came before felt that a 2, 3, 4+ year wait for service, that is intended to be delivered in early years,
does not warrant emergency action.

7. Gratitude. For your child’s autism diagnosis, because if it were CP, Down’s Syndrome, GDD, FASD, etc. you’re not getting a dime.

8. An Outlet. For stress. Because disabilities are not taken seriously in Ontario and it’s commonplace
to be strung along for weeks, months, years as government’s half-baked plans, or straight-up inaction, is enough to drive any parent to their breaking point.

9. Will. Because you can’t stop. It doesn’t end. And just because your province won’t recognize your child’s
health care needs, doesn’t mean they stop having them.

In Ontario, in Canada, a disability forces you into a second class of citizenship, where your needs are deemed elective, non-essential. Diagnosis descrimination is alive and well in Canada, and its burdens
are downloaded onto the shoulders of parents and caregivers who are already buckling under the pressure of their everyday lives. It’s time for action.
