Read this, then consider what happens if the Lib Dems pivot to an outright "revoke Article 50 and stay in the EU" stance from any form of second referendum. They can suck all the oxygen out of the Remain room before Labour can draw breath. ⁦@LibDemstheguardian.com/commentisfree/…
Because bear in mind that the LD don't need to win a single Leave vote - not one - in order to boost their vote share enormously. All they have to do is court the lion's share of those who are now seeking Remain. And the best & most obvious fit is to offer them just that: Remain.
Note: that is not the same as saying they should disregard Leave concerns entirely *after* a GE (concerns such as feeling left behind by London/SE).

But they need play no part during the GE itself. Just make a pure remain play for Remain voters, and watch the votes pour in.
The pitch (needs tweaking!) "While acknowledging the result of the 2016 referendum, we believe the evidence of the last 3 years shows categorically that it is not in the UK's best interests to continue with Brexit. We also refuse to put the integrity of the Union at risk."
"At a time when the climate change emergency represents an existential risk to our way of life, it is a distracting indulgence to continue to pursue a damaging Brexit. Instead, we should remain in the EU, and work with European partners to combat these and other threats."
Remember: there is no law of politics that says that just because Labour has been one of the two main parties for a century, that it should always be so.

Think bigger. Aim to vacuum up ALL the Remain votes with an unequivocal stance. Get in early enough and Labour become me-too.
And as the (soon to be) largest party, the LDs need to behave like it. Remain Alliance with the Greens, PC, SNP makes perfect sense. Getting mired with Labour even under the guise of maximising the Remain vote makes no sense at all. Let Labour stay Billy-no-mates outside the R.A.
Remember, you're only playing to Remain voters. They're the ones whose votes are going to propel you into power, or into the kingmaker role. So filter everything through what *they* need to hear. They are fed up to their back teeth of equivocation and half-measures.
Someone is going to end up occupying the Militant Remain position - will it be you?

Added: quick reminder of the potential...

2010 LD vote: 6,836,825
2017 LD vote: 2,371,910

but

2016 Remain vote: 16,141,241

Even if we are pessimistic and assume zero new Remain voters, that's nearly 9,300,000 potential extra votes to chase, even compared to 2010.
