Income inequality within countries has *not* risen overall.

Over the last 25 years, inequality has gone up in some countries and has fallen in others.

The average Gini measure of inequality fell somewhat, from 39.6 to 38.6.

At the same time, the income inequality rates of countries has been converging:

Within-country income inequality decreased in many high-inequality countries and grew in many low-inequality countries.
While inequality within countries has stayed relatively constant on average, the inequality between countries has fallen.

Overall world income inequality has therefore fallen: The Gini coefficient of inequality fell from 69 to 65 between 2003 and 2013.
At the same time
-Median global income (adjusted for prices) almost doubled, from around $1,100 to 2,000 a year
-Mean income grew from around $3,500 to 5,400
-The share of people with less than $2 a day fell from around 30% to 12% of the world population
