@J_amesp Interesting, and I think it's partially true ; we shouldn't give disinfo oxygen, but I also worry it's over simplistic. It depends on audience as well; say there is disinformation...

@J_amesp and you have counter-facts, there may be a backfire effect of you present those facts to people who believe the disinformation BUT...

@J_amesp Depending on reach, your rebuttal / narrative on the issue may be the FIRST that reaches some of the audience. I think there is value in exposing the lies head on. I don't think you convince the person you are arguing with, however

@J_amesp In my mindz when arguing with say a proponent of Scottish Independence, the value is in rebutting their lies to the wider readership of the thread.

@J_amesp One thing I would really like to take off if #DemagogueBingo if you see someone using these techniques, call them out. 1st it highlights to them and others you recognise what they are doing and it's not acceptable. 2nd it pre-empts them switching to another of the tactics

@J_amesp I'd like to try and get going #LogicalFallacyBingo for the same reason. Though this table isn't complete . If we call it out we can improve debate.

@J_amesp I've found it helpful, when approaching someone who has fallen for disinformation to be empathetic. Say , look, I understand why you believe that, and I understand that what I say won't change your mind. And this is why;

@J_amesp So what can we do? Simple politics give this advice, which can be hard to follow in the heat of the debate, but I think are worthwhile.

@J_amesp And remember that what happens to us isn't important, all that matters is how we choose to react. With rationality and virtue, even if we are still wretches, and more irrational than we like to admit.
