Tsunami can start coming onshore before warnings are even issued. Play it safe & just get uphill FAST.
I hope this isn’t about to be a Bad News Day. Significant Indonesia quake: earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/ev…
But it’s tricky, Indonesia’s had a bad run in recent years of chaotic warnings, unclear responses (GET TO HIGH GROUND), vandalized equipment, erosion of public trust...
I hope the quake didn’t generate a tsunami.
This is usually vertical motion on a fault (which happens near Indonesia), but can be things like a submarine mountain moving sideways (2018: earther.gizmodo.com/scientists-are…) or landslides in to water.
But we never know how big tsunami will be until they start coming on shore. Inches? Tens of meters? TBD every time.
Here’s hoping Indonesia got a jolt, but no tsunami was generated.
Here’s hoping that no one dies from a tsunami today; that we won’t see final moments captured on video; that we don’t add to long lists of Lessons Learned.
Need to wait a bit longer for an all-clear, but with any luck this will be a story of how Indonesia’s improved its tsunami warning & public education vs last year.
I promise: No emergency manager ever issues evacuation orders for fun.
