keep hearing about how bad 'big tech' is, but wonder why we ended up in this position and what, if anything, might change? and if #bitcoin has anything to do with it?

me too! so I wrote this 😊

areomagazine.com/2019/07/31/tow…
“Many seem to believe that Facebook, Google and others succumb to temptation to inflict such harm solely because they are big. Hence, make them smaller! Break them up! It doesn’t appear to have seriously occurred to these people that they are big BECAUSE they inflict such harm.”
“Those who generate the data are happy to do so for free, for it is of no monetary value to them, and is why those who will derive any productive value from it will only be the already very well capitalised.”
“It’s like they grew several bacteria in a petri dish, returned to find that one had grown to exhaust the available resources and starved the rest to death, and concluded that the problem was this particular unfortunate outcome rather than the nature of bacteria.”
“The Internet is an engineering project with trade-offs, not an ethereal force of pure social progress. It can and should be changed to suit human beings, rather than the more popular and more celebrated, but frankly dystopian, inversion.”
“Where value, scarcity, consensus, and identity might have proved useful, private, centralised pseudo-protocol managers have lodged themselves within the ostensibly peer-to-peer network as increasingly unavoidable gatekeepers.”
I've thanked those covered in detail in the piece already, but shout out also to usual suspects @minds, @telegram, @brave, and @signalapp whom I mentioned, and @HelloZeroNet, @BitTorrent, and @bitchute whom I unfortunately had to cut as it was long enough as it is!
... and everybody else brave enough to open source their work, forcing themselves to win users by their own volition by continually offering the best experience, rather than trapping users to continually exploit by making it extremely difficult to leave.

#opensource 😊
