One of several instances of Trump administration retaliation against government scientists trying to document the effects of climate change, via @ProudResister. The example has found emulators.
Brazil’s Trumplike President Bolsonaro — an erratic man with a high tolerance for corruption and, @londonoe reports, a weakness for making spurious statements — fired the head of an agency that reported a 39% increase in deforestation in the Amazon. nytimes.com/2019/08/02/wor…
The deforestation itself is a catastrophe, both on its own terms and for what it portends. It is incentivized in part, incidentally, by Trump’s trade war with China, which has boosted Chinese demand for Brazilian soybeans in place of the American beans China is no longer buying.
Main point here is, as we slide further into climate crisis other governments are emulating the Trump administration’s zeal to suppress data it does not want the public to see. [end]
