As the lights are flickering across the liberal world, as Britain feels trapped in our own such moment, it’s painful to reflect that the self-inflicted retreat and isolation of Brexit couldn’t come at a worse time.

As the huge global crises of climate change, migration, the complexities of AI/automation etc hit us each in our domestic spheres, PM May’s ill-chosen language of “citizens of nowhere” couldn’t be less apt.
