Brexit has had a clear negative impact on foreign direct investment (FDI), according to official figures. Fewer projects, leading to fewer jobs. And the trend is stark. (Note: figures for FDI by value include the effect of foreign firms acquiring UK ones. This strips that out.)
This is a more apt way of looking at FDI, because if a foreign company spends £1 billion to acquire a UK firm, that counts as £1 billion in FDI, but nothing's actually changed except who the shareholders of that firm are. No new jobs, no new investment in plant or machinery, etc.
And of course, once a UK firm is in foreign ownership, that may have a negative impact (from the UK's perspective) on who gets to collect the taxes it generates. So headline FDI figures are grandstanding, nothing more. This detailed data, that looks at the *consequences*, is key.

Gallows humour of course. Boris Johnson has wiped 2.8% off the pound vs the dollar, and 3.5% off the pound vs the euro. That's quite a hefty chunk! And the pound has now settled at the new low for several weeks, so it's more than a blip. And with stockpiling/Christmas looming...

Scary piece about how a snap GE could take place on 1 November. It has a point - we always think of elections as happening on Thursdays, but there's no obligation. It's just habit. So the date could work. And I would guess that BJ would smash it.

1) By holding the GE after Brexit, one could say "what's the point of the Brexit Party?" and many voters may think the same.
2) It will burnish the Tories' hard Brexit credentials, since proroging Parliament during the election campaign (that *is* a rule) delivers a no deal.
3) It puts the other parties in a real bind. People who follow Brexit closely know it won't be over on Brexit Day, but the average voter - who's sick of the whole mess - may not be interested in a manifesto built around the "next stages" of Brexit.

Something non-Brexit related for once. I want to talk a little bit about TopCashback. I've had some great experiences with the site, so it seemed good to spread the word. Basically, you join and then shop as usual at over 4,000 retailers (going via the TopCashback site each time)
In return, you get a kickback from the retailer, either as a % of spend or as a flat £ amount. For instance, you might get 4-10% back on a hotel booking, a few % on online fashion retailers - or a hefty £50-£100+ bonus for changing utilities provider, broadband supplier etc.
The best bit about it is that the price you pay isn't affected i.e. if you're buying something that would cost £50 if you went directly to the ecommerce site, it will still cost £50 via the TopCashback link to that merchant.

1. That’s not the worst of it and doesn’t tell the full story - after Trump put up a not for sale sign, Chinese direct investment in US plunged 83% in 2018 (Chinese investing in Europe plunged 70% in 2018). Canada “won” however - Chinese investment rose 80% in Canada in 2018 🇨🇦
2. Chinese investments of $45.6 billion in 2016 boosted US economy; they plunged to $4.8 billion in 2018 amid trade/tariff wars. Possibly spooked by Russia investigation, China went on a record-setting selling spree of real estate, hospitality holdings. cnn.com/2019/01/14/inv…

First things first, it is important to point out, again, that the news of both HSBC and UBS closing down what are essentially satellite offices in #Nigeria is really a non-issue.
HSBC for example, is cutting its branches in up to a quarter of the 67 countries it operates in last I checked, so again, that is not the issue.
What should terrify us is that in the last year, foreign direct investment into our country has plunged by a factor of 30%.

That is significant, and if #Nigeria were serious, there should be a cabinet level meeting, but no, meat-heads will be masturbating about "corruption".
