Interesting thread, and confirms the point I have made several times that the FTA the current UK Government wants is probably not available.

Though tbh not sure the current government has much of an idea about what FTA it wants with the EU or anyone else.
Same from another UK journalist in Brussels.
As I wrote last month... and we have to see no-deal not as a conscious decision, but as again, the failure to make a conscious decision when to do so would reqwuire uncomfortable trade offs. ecipe.org/blog/isolation…

Latest Brexit view from Ireland. The ruling faction of the Conservative Party can never make a deal with the EU that is acceptable to both, but at some point in the future...
A UK US trade deal may upset this calculation by making a future UK EU deal much more difficult - hence the centrality of this to the current Government, the encouragement by anti EU voices in the US, and the opposition by Irish lobby there
Certainly in the minds of some in the UK the whole point of a US trade deal is to make the EU relationship difficult. That's why they never go into detail on how the UK will benefit - its a political not economic deal. Main problem with this approach is electoral unpopularity

As we get used to, solely for domestic consumption. Telling a negotiating partner that their red line is not common sense doesn't tend to get you very far.

Similarly refusing to accept the other sides red lines and negotiate a compromise within them shows a total lack of sincerity. This is what Johnson has done with regard to the Irish Border and Brexit issue.
Another alternative would be to say that the red lines of the other side will not allow a deal, but such honesty is similarly not part of the strategy. The other side tends to notice though...

Plenty of people in the UK not limited to the most pro no-deal voices are criticising the EU's approach to Brexit negotiations, blaming them for the breakdown. A few in the EU as well. Looking at it in a different way, what do we learn from EU and UK negotiations elsewhere?
The UK has struggled in most major international negotiations to date. The previous Government thought they could avoid a WTO negotiation on agriculture quotas and didn't, and have had limited success rolling over trade deals with major partners
Looking at trade deal rollovers, Japan and Canada said no, Switzerland and Norway are only partial, of our major trading partners only Korea after some hesitation agreed to roll over the trade deal. (this story from Canada does not paint a pretty picture) cbc.ca/news/politics/…

UK flagged oil/chemical tanker STENA IMPERO doing something interesting at the moment. It's port is the opposite way of where it's heading, and it's heading directly for the #Iran|ian island of Qeshm.. 🤔
The track of this ship is incredibly concerning, if it continues on it's track towards Iran, which it's only 9.5 nautical miles from..

The “Deep State” coup only failed at unseating Trump. It succeeded spectacularly at exposing the malfeasance of many of its own executors, a point I’ve made several times before. Victor Davis Hanson’s list of officials is sizable, but not exhaustive.
His focus is on the DOJ and FBI. But there has been tremendous leg-work done by journalists and blogger-investigators on complicity in other corners of the federal bureaucracy, and there is much that is publicly known that has yet to figure in any meaningful formal investigation
