I feel that. The first thing I thought of was how many leftist writers and activists have been open about their mental health struggles. Under a policy that allows this administration to decide whose politics are threatening, we're pretty much gift wrapped.
Btw ecofascism is fringe af now, but it will become increasingly attractive to many Americans as ecological collapse intensifies. People who wouldn't normally slide to the hard right will be panicked and more willing to accept fascistic "solutions" to overwhelming crises.
So you get fascistic results. A fixation w identity bolsters policies that repel outsiders and horde resources. But battening down the hatches won't limit the militaristic reach of the U.S. Bc the U.S. has used terrorism as an excuse to get a major foothold in Africa & elsewhere.
It's not hard to imagine a lot of white folks in the U.S. deeming themselves superior to, or simply more important than, those who possess what the U.S. would seize to maintain civilization as we know it. Like some manifest destiny shit, only global and during the apocalypse.
And if we wind up on that path, the same principles would apply internally. Fascistic tendencies regarding disabled people & scapegoated folks would eventually lead to a greater consolidation of resources -- one that would have a serious death toll.
The GOP is setting the table for all of this w their efforts to pass insurance laws that will kill tens of thousands & to cut food & housing assistance for the poor. They're trying to normalize the idea that it's only fair to everyone else to let the "weak" suffer/die.
Escalations of such policies would be accepted by a lot of folks bent on their own survival. Even if they take issue with it, they will have empowered the state so much that its mechanisms could feel inevitable.
I'm not saying any of this is inevitable. I don't believe in done deals. But it's also not *unlikely* and people need to expand their imaginations enough to fathom that if we want to prevent shit from going down that way.
Also, who's in power as things get worse will have a big impact on how shit goes down, but we will have to wage a relentless fight for human rights regardless of who's in office. So be ready for that too. We are what we've got. So we need to be strategic and organize now.
And you can't simply organize on the basis of how you feel or what would be satisfying. You have to understand & consider how systems and operational narratives work, and how not to inadvertently give your fascistic enemies more power. truthout.org/articles/how-t…
