NEW: Britain may be unable to prevent EU fishermen from entering UK waters illegally in the event of a no deal Brexit because there are not enough vessels to police the seas, an internal Government email has revealed.
It states: "There is a lot of uncertainty about the sufficiency of enforcement in a no deal because we have 12 vessels that need to monitor a space three times the size of the surface area of the UK."
The internal Defra email also warns: "This could have reputational damage for Defra and our ability to protect fisheries so we need to provide a strong line to rebut this."
Gov response: “Unfortunately this evening an internal email was inadvertently sent outside of Defra ...Britain is leaving the EU on Oct 31st with or without a deal. We are confident that we will have the ships and the expertise we need to properly enforce security in UK waters"
