Counter/anti terrorism folks still use colonial style maps to track transnational threats. Go figure. Terrorism, drugs, humans, bribes, dirty money all flow like rivers into all nations via all means. Just as it always has. 
It is that exact threat to cadastral control that scares the nation state. Sometimes they build walls, sometimes they kill or deport everyone that isn't them. When you live, travel and know these people you understand how futile and self serving most efforts are.
You will discover that these 'secret" routes and methods are the same through history, even the Templar money system or ancient slave trade. Money and ambition lubricates everything.
