Trump’s Assault on the Global Trading System
and
Why Decoupling From China Will Change Everything
"Even if Trump loses reelection in 2020, global trade will never be the same."

First, a note of gratitude.
It is not often these digitial days that something I write ends up in hard copy, let alone on (the verrrry tippy-top of?) the cover of @ForeignAffairs.
That was VERY nice.
(ink-stained finger added for effect)
ok. back to the content...
Looking back after 2.5 years, some of Trump's trade policies (steel, aluminum tariffs) were pure protectionism.
Others, like renegotiating NAFTA or the trade deal with South Korea, were needlessly contentious.
BUT...
More problematic are his OTHER trade actions. Two in particular are still ongoing.
And they have had less obvious, but no less damaging, effects.
Trump’s attacks on the World Trade Organization go beyond rhetoric.
He has already done lasting damage. A future administration could repair some of it. But not all.
Destroying the WTO is too bad. So much of global trade has nothing to do with the United States.
But the BOLDEST move is Trump trying to use trade policy to decouple the US and Chinese economies.
That is a seismic shift. And there is now no going back.
There are no charts or tariff pictures in this @ForeignAffairs piece, just words. A LOT of words.
If you want pictures of tariffs, you'll need to go here
