The Withdrawal Agreement perpetuates the doctrines of ‘direct effect’ and supremacy of EU law over UK law, obliging UK courts to strike down Acts of Parliament if inconsistent with vague provisions of the WA or of EU laws to which it gives effect.
The WA perpetuates the jurisdiction of the ECJ, a foreign court with no British judge, either directly, or via a backdoor mechanism modelled on the EU’s agreement with Ukraine, under which the arbitral tribunal is bound to refer matters of EU law for decision by the ECJ.

1/3 The backstop is an integral part of the present Withdrawal Agreement. Leaving it out of the WA Bill does not make it vanish.

Rather than postpone implementation of the ugly truths of the WA, we need the Govt to seek replacement: #MalthouseCompromise

2/3 We voted for the Brady Amendment: the PM has a mandate to renegotiate. Voting for the WAIB is voting to implement the current WA.

If the Govt intends to remove the Backstop, it needs removing from the WA, or the UK will be bound in international law to introduce it later
3/3 Postponing the implementation of the most unpalatable parts of the Withdrawal Agreement in the hope they disappear is the legislative equivalent of fat free chocolate, headache free wine or exercising while sitting down.

This is not a way to ratify a treaty.

This idea of a hard v soft Brexit is the ludicrous invention of opponents of leaving.

1. We are still in the EU nearly 3 years after the Referendum. We accepted the Art 50 route. We then accepted another 18 months of implementation period.
2. We accepted ECJ jurisdiction over the agreement including over how much we pay and EU citizens rights.

Stepping back from the culture wars for a short thread on #Japan & #Religion. Believe it or not, this is my specialist area of research and as I finish up a new paper on the topic, I thought I would share some interesting results. Strap in!
The popular image of Japan & religion is something of a paradox. On the one hand, you have lots of pieces about Japan as a country of non-believers. This is usually based on survey data where only 10-15% of Japanese people self-identify as religious.
Indeed, we saw this exact pattern in data we collected from 1,000 Japanese respondents in 2016. When we asked whether they would describe themselves as religious, regardless of participation in religious events, we got the following responses: only 10% identified as religious.

#BorisJohnson has been accused of lying about claims concerning #Turkey during the #Referendum. My legal team and I are prosecuting @BorisJohnson for the alleged offence of misconduct in public office, in connection with claims he made that the UK 'sends' £350 million to the EU.
2. Mr Johnson is innocent unless proven guilty by a court of law. Please do not comment upon Mr Johnson's innocence or guilt once the case has been initiated with the courts in the coming weeks.
3. Please use respectful and measured language when referring to Mr Johnson, the courts and our case whilst the prosecution case is active. Do not risk being accused of contempt of court.

Thread: Thoughts on Bombing, Politics, and Voting

1. After dinner with my wife and more than a few beers, my mind opens up wide, and I get the urge to do a thread. Happens every dang time! Here is a stream of consciousness, including interaction with some Tw@tter pals.
2. First of all, the logistics required to deliver 14 (or more) bombs are beyond the capability of this single kook (Sayoc). Others are being chased down as we speak. That pretty sparse indictment was issued to protect and hide ongoing LE actions to get the others.
3. I have learned to get my tells on real-time events from @POTUS based on his public statements and tweets. I have disciplined myself to realize that EVERY single communique from him is purposeful and aimed at achieving a particular political end.
