MINI-THREAD: Trump continued spreading misinformation today about why Russia was kicked out of the G8. He said it was because Putin "outsmarted" Obama and that Obama was angry... so he kicked Russia out of the G8.
Here's the real reason the G8 countries gave in 2014: "We... reaffirm our support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence ... International law prohibits the acquisition of part or all of another state’s territory through coercion or force."
It was called the "Hague Declaration," and it was signed by the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union. You can read the statement here: obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/the-press-offi…
To be clear, Trump has never offered a strong and unequivocal statement like this against Russia's annexation of Crimea. Instead, he has echoed the Kremlin's talking points and has shown some openness to having Russia keep Crimea. More on that here: washingtonpost.com/news/democracy…
Perhaps the most glaring example was in July 2016 when Trump told @GStephanopoulos: "...the people of Crimea, from what I've heard, would rather be with Russia than where they were..." abcnews.go.com/ThisWeek/trump…
