Trump today repeated his desire for Russia to rejoin the G7. Remember: The US, UK, EU, Germany, Japan, etc. kicked Russia out in 2014 because Putin invaded and annexed Crimea. Russia is still holding onto Crimea today. Yet, Trump wants Russia back in this prestigious group.
Trump said, “I guess President Obama -- because Putin outsmarted him -- President Obama thought it wasn’t a good thing to have Russia in, so he wanted Russia out." (h/t @betsy_klein)
@betsy_klein Not only has Russia held onto Crimea since 2014... they also (1) Militarily intervened in Syria to help Assad, (2) interfered in the 2016 US election, (3) used chemical weapons on British soil, (4) violated the INF treaty. Yet, Trump is insistent that he wants Russia in the G8.

MINI-THREAD: Trump continued spreading misinformation today about why Russia was kicked out of the G8. He said it was because Putin "outsmarted" Obama and that Obama was angry... so he kicked Russia out of the G8.
Here's the real reason the G8 countries gave in 2014: "We... reaffirm our support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence ... International law prohibits the acquisition of part or all of another state’s territory through coercion or force."
