As I recall this happened also under May. Just as for her the main obstacle to a Withdrawal Agreement is Parliament. Just as for her no attempt is being made to change that. Just as for her the focus is on challenging a hard red line of the other side.
One strength of the EU in negotiating is that positions must be shared / debated with Member States - increasing the chances of them being robust. UK positions are the product of very little debate or scrutiny, increasing the chances that they aren't fully thought through.
Whatever happens in talks between UK and EU Parliament will have no more than 8 sitting days in which to scrutinise and debate Government plans. On a matter that will affect the country for years to come that simply isn't good enough.

The Government is probably fortunate that Labour won't support a national Government led by Hammond or Gauke - because that would split the Conservative Party particularly effectively.

Still expecting a confidence vote on 21 Oct - so time yet...
There's a lot of Conservative Party bitterness surfacing right now - it would be fair to say that many potential rebels are seeing the words about wanting a deal not matched by actions of acceptance of no-deal or else.
From the other wing of the Conservative Party. The underlying article on how Johnson gets the EU to drop the backstop lacks realism. But rebels will also be asking themselves how likely it is Johnson double-crosses his own Cabinet - unlikely surely?

The same old negotiating mistake - blame others rather than assembling a majority negotiating position. We will end up with a Brexit outcome that few in Parliament wish to defend, which will not help us deal with the next stages
This is the Prime Minister in campaigning mode. His claims about negotiations are dubious at best. It is he who has so far moved, not the EU.
Full round evidently. Not usually done by someone who is winning. The prorogue decision was not, in the short term, a good one.

I think it’s undeniable that, as many Brussels colleagues have picked up in the last weeks, there’s been a shift of rhetoric from the EU. Less explicit emphasis on ‘we won’t touch the withdrawal agreement’ and ‘only possible deal’. BUT...
...don’t mistake this for a change in fundamentals. It looks like a strategic decision to avoid picking up blame for something the EU side believes is a hard fact (no alternative to the backstop) and that fact being painted as an EU decision rather than consequence of red lines
‘Only possible deal’ as a message from the EU was always tailored to get the withdrawal agreement through Parliament. But ‘only possible deal’ as a fact - beyond tweaks - is something the EU just believes flows from standing by Ireland and single market integrity + UK red lines

EU State aid rules will continue to apply until the end of the transition period. However, for up to four years from the end of the transition period, the Commission will be able to bring a State aid case against the UK on facts arising before the end of the transition period.
Ben should also note that the state aid rules will be transposed into U.K. law via the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018. That’s the same act which ends our membership of the EU.
So in law the only path to achieve Bens desire is to pass the Withdrawal Agreement which include provision to end the state aid rules.

In March, after waiting 4 yrs, an Archbishop finally agreed to meet me to discuss his Bishop involved in my case, who I’d reported my abuse to in 1994. I was given 1 hour. His staff demanded I meet him in a coffee shop; they said he had meetings all day & would miss his lunch. /1
Their entire focus was on that. I pointed out this was to discuss my child abuse. Very reluctantly, they suggested a different venue. Australian Catholic University, where the Archbishops meetings were, “so he won’t be inconvenienced by you.” Yes, their exact words. /2
They saw no issue at all with this. And they really didn’t care if I had one. When we got there, we were shown to this meeting room. Fully windowed, clearly staff there knew exactly why we were there and said the Archbishop had requested it “for safety.” /3

1/3 No deal is not a long-term policy. It is a moment - leaving without an agreement on a particular date - but it cannot be where we end up. Some kind of arrangement would eventually have to be reached....
2/3 ...but it’s pretty clear that the EU would insist on the main parts of the Withdrawal Agreement being accepted by the UK before they agreed to anything - eg the kind of Canada-style deal which the PM says he wants but which wouldn’t solve the problem of the Irish border.
3/3 So no deal is not only by far the most economically damaging policy but also - ultimately - pointless. That’s why the House of Commons must prevent the new Government from inflicting it on the British people.

#ABTVtoStopBrexit isn't about affecting the balance of power or forcing a General Election. #ABTV is about sending a message to the Tories, and *especially* to Labour that people don't support *any* #Brexit. Not a #HardBrexit, #SoftBrexit, #NoDealBrexit, #Lexit, or *any* Brexit.
The Tory's control more than half of councils, nearly double Labour. Losing control of even half of them is unrealistic, and even if it happened under fixed term government I can all but guarantee it won't result in a General Election.
A Prime Minister calls a GE under two circumstances:
1) They are miles ahead in the polls and think they can increase their majority (as in 2017)
2) They have suffered a humiliating defeat or scandal.
