A reminder: whenever the Johnson government refers to its “negotiating position”, remember that it hasn’t got one. Demanding that the EU think of something to replace the backstop without producing proposals of your own is not a negotiating position: it’s a tantrum.
The absence of a negotiating position is no surprise. The likelihood is that there is almost certainly zero overlap between what could effectively keep the Irish border open while protecting the single market and what is acceptable to the hard Brexit ideologues now in charge.
@DavidGauke is also right that even if a deal could be negotiated there is no time to get the legislation through by 31 October.
For a Government largely composed of people who have insisted on detailed scrutiny of every comma of EU related legislation on the ground of its constitutional importance to contemplate rushing this legislation through Parliament in hours is breathtaking in its hypocrisy.
