We have a history in this country of resisting violence and of working tirelessly towards a society that upholds and respects the human rights and dignity of our people. Let us build on that history. This is a TIME to act – a time to be bold and decisive.
In the Mass Democratic Movement we established cells to deal with community issues around the country, we worked through street committees to challenge the injustices of apartheid.
Together in communities, we came together to say NO MORE- FREEDOM IN OUR LIFETIME. Similarly we need to be coming together to say NO MORE – we will build homes, communities, schools, work places, public spaces and a country in which womxn are and feel safe.
We call on ALL South Africans to respond to the call: no more violence, no more femicide.
We call on families to stop protecting the Perpetrators.
We call on our communities to find ways to organize, like we did in the mass democratic movement, that can be responsive to the needs of survivors whilst consciously rebuilding caring and peaceful communities.
We call on all sections of civil society, including labour organizations to take the #GBVFDeclaration forward.
We call on our churches and religious leaders to take a firm stand and to use their leadership and influence in communities to build positive social cohesion against gender-based violence.
We call on those in the media to actively contribute towards addressing harmful social norms that drive gender-based violence.
We call on business leaders to address all forms of violence in the workplace and to support our national efforts to eradicate gender-based violence.
