US offers cash to tanker captains in bid to seize Iranian ships ft.com/content/201880… This is fascinating. The Trump Administration sent a personal e-mail to the captain, they report, offering him millions of dollars to pilot the ship to a country where it could be impounded.
They report that we've emailed or texted about a dozen captains in recent months. “With this money you can have any life you wish and be well-off in old age,” Mr Hook wrote. “If you choose not to take this easy path, life will be much harder for you.”
So all you need to do to have any life you wish and be well-off in old age is pick up a tanker of Iranian oil and wait for Uncle Sam to offer you millions for it?

Well, in honor of our dear departed NSA Bolton, this is what he both predicted and what he saw as critical to prevent.

Bolton was a warmonger, that charge is fair. nytimes.com/2015/03/26/opi….
But I'd genuinely like to hear, from the people thrilled by his demise, *their* plans for preventing the complete collapse of the NP, an ensuing regional nuclear arms race, and the terrifying prospect of an ensuing nuclear mishap. I hope they have one.
Because he wasn't a warmonger who was just making that stuff up. He was a warmonger who could see clearly that this was what was at stake, and something needed to be done to stop this. I regret that the only thing he could imagine was "bombing."

It is good. I think the images in #olay will be hard to understand to people who didn't live through those events, and some of the subtext in #susaman won't make sense to Anglophones who wouldn't grasp the meaning of some of these issues.
But I still think people should watch them: They convey more about Turkey than most conventional reporting does. Watch #olay for the imagery, more than the music or lyrics: That's really what the place feels like, day after day, for normal people, for long periods.
I didn't think #olay was especially interesting musically (in fact I thought it was awful, musically), but the collection of images and the emotions associated with them sure took me back. #Susamam was more interesting musically and artistically.

There are problems with this kind of analysis. The first is that we just don't know if they apply to the US, or if our institutions are more robust. There's only one way to know, which is to wait to see. The second is that warning of it seems futile.
I don't think Americans generally believe these things can happen. In the main, they don't see the experiences of other countries as relevant to the US, no matter how similar they look to a small subgroup of Americans who've seen this cascade happen elsewhere.
So when you say, "Look what happened in Hungary," generally the response is, "Hungary? Why does that matter?"
