NEW: "I was not going to set that agency up asking Tim Geithner every day ‘Mother may I?’” Warren says now. My deep dive on Warren's war with the Obama team during the financial crisis (w/ a Warren sit-down + Rahm, Axe, Valerie, Summers, and others). politico.com/magazine/story…
“I believe the recovery should have been from the ground up, and people with Geithner’s and Summers’ background would never see the world that way," Warren says.

Summers responds: "Financial crises are not morality plays."
Despite often focusing on areas of agreement like the CFPB, it's fair to say that...uh...these two teams just don't like each other.
Warren and Biden debate for the 1st time tonight and they see this period differently. Biden boasts abt the Obama admin saving the econ from a Great Depression, Warren regards the Obama admin’s top-down response as part of the reason a man like Trump won 8 yrs. later.
When I asked if she tied the response, especially to the housing crisis, to Trump winning, Warren said "yes" and explained: “America works great for the wealthy, and the well-connected -- that was demonstrated big time during the financial crisis...Donald Trump stepped into that"
Watching the old Warren hearings w/ Geithner about TARP, you can see why one student once dubbed her teaching method as "Socratic w/ a machine gun."
TARP oversight panel had lil power (monthly reports, hearings but no subpoena power) so Warren plotted a different strategy: be loud. Viral hearings, the monthly report became a monthly media tour, AND she made explainer videos (I uploaded the 1st to YT)
Also, Warren got to hear my jokes.
fwiw, I thought of this story as a sequel of sorts to this earlier one about Warren’s conversion. If you are doing a political bio of her, the story of going from Republican to progressive and then her during the financial crisis are touchstones. politico.com/magazine/story…
feedback from Mom: “the one quote I wasnt crazy about they put in the headline.”
And some old video of the these moments in the story put together by the amazing @marynewmanphoto (who managed to edit my mangled explanation of the story into something coherent).
And if you want to hear some of the interview with Warren on the “Big Structural Change” Winnebago, @annielrees did an amazing job cutting this week’s nerdcast. @PoliticoScott and @ec_schneider also do a great break down of the debate in the first half. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pol…
And @rtraister wrote an excellent piece on asking female candidates abt sexism (as I did when I asked Warren abt Obama WH suggesting she be “cheerleader” for the cfpb). “They are correct to decline. It is not a dodge; it is a refusal to step into a trap.” thecut.com/2019/09/how-i-…
