THREAD:
"Politics is a team sport" is always the line thrown at people complaining about the *nature and extent* of party discipline in Canada. Yes, political organization is crucial. Parties are a natural part of our system, ...
and organizing around platforms and shared principles are key to forming government.

But the idea that the degree of party discipline we see in Canada is required for this is fucking nonsense. /2
We've transformed 'shared values' into pitiful obedience at the feet of Dear Leader.

We've transformed the presentation of a platform into treating any and all disagreement or dissent as treasonous.

It's not party discipline but cult-like faith and obedience. /3
We know it has gone too far. Exit interviews with MPs constantly tell us they too often felt impotent in large part due to control from the leader's office. Parliament is weak. The opposition is ineffective. This isn't the way the system as designed has to work, it's cultural. /4
And every time you cynically respond with "yeah but if you vote based on the local candidate instead of party you're just wasting your vote" you're not convincing, you're just feeding the bullshit culture that we as voters permit to continue. /Fin.
