OK. My 2 cents worth. In 2001 dudes still felt it was ok to put their hands on female employees. And no one would say anything. Things were different. Having said that, it is a cringe-worthy photo. However... 1/21 #cdnpoli
Cultural appropriation was beginning to be talked about but had not gained the traction it would a few years later. Trudeau should explain and apologise. And we should give him the opportunity to explain and apologise. 2/21
As he is now doing. He deeply regrets it. He shouldn't have done it. He should have known better. Except, it is hard to say exactly how he should have known better. If we all had crystal balls or time machines,... 3/21
... how many embarrassing things could we have avoided doing in our youth? He was 28. What were you doing when you were 28? Anything you might regret now? I want to make one thing completely clear... 4/21
Wearing face paint while portraying a fictional character at a costume party in 2001 and going forward to embrace better ideals wholeheartedly, is not the same as making a speech against gay marriage in the House of Commons in 2005 and continuing to vote against... 5/21
LGBTQ+ rights in every vote SINCE THEN. There is no direct equivalency. One leader has demonstrably changed and evolved. One leader is still telling anti-choice groups he is going to get them what they want if he is elected. 6/21
Why did Time Magazine break this story, now? A week into the federal election campaign? Well, the CPC allies in the south (GOP) and the IDU (headed by Harper) have people scouring every aspect of Justin Trudeau's life right now. Going back as far as they can. 7/21
What will the next "bombshell" be? Did he have a tantrum in a store when he was 2? Probably. Don't all kids? Wait for the footage... 8/21
It speaks 2 his character that they had 2 go back so far to find anything compromising. He is not a closet racist. Surely, by now, we all know that. He did a stupid thing in his 20s that he has apologised for, that he regrets. It isn't reflected in anything he has done since.9/21
Why is this coming to light now? As mentioned, there are powerful people with a vested interest in making sure the Liberals do not win the election. And they are, apparently, foreign-based. To have a magazine in another country digging for dirt suggests that... 10/ 21
...there are foreign interests with a big stake in the outcome of this election. As, indeed, there are. The GOP and other IDU members would very much love to have Canada in the fold. Canada is an irritation to them. 11/21
We are not inclined to be right-wing, racist, misogynist, or Republican. Maybe ~30% are, but the majority resist the drive around the globe to erect right-wing authoritarian governments. And we must continue to do so. 12/21
No one wants a CPC government more than Stephen Harper. And you can expect, if Canada elects the CPC to government, that we will be punished severely for punting the Harper Government in 2015. 13/21
It takes a lot of cash and determination to go back almost 20 years and acquire a photo that may only exist in some musty corner of a school yearbook archive. It wasn't online. There wasn't much online back in 2001. 14/21
Between the outright lies involving Faith Goldy and Bianca Adreescu, and the misappropriation of Rick Mercer's words, and the lies about capital gains tax, and the lies about an RCMP investigation, and the lie about Trudeau bringing one of Jaimie Bulger's killers to Canada 15/21
And the lie about the RCMP commissioner being married to Bill Morneau's cousin, and the lies about the Liberals raising taxes on the middle class... Seriously? Where is the real threat to Canada? 16/21
With a man who did something stupid when he was young for which he takes responsibility and apologizes for? Or with a party that is making stuff up, in the here and now, to try to trick people into voting for them? 17/21
Before you have some knee-jerk reaction to the Time photo, think about that. Think about what misguided things you got up to in your 20s. Think about glass houses and stones. Think about Canada. 18/21
Because if the CPC wins because of this, Canada will see environmental measured rolled back, workplace health and safety rolled back, food and water inspections rolled back, our higher education gutted, transportation safety rolled back, First Nations gains rolled back... 19/21
LGBTQ2+ and women's rights rolled back, worker's rights rolled back.... The CPC is promising a return to the 50s or earlier. Cuts to refugee admissions, returns to a draconian justice system... And, most frightening of all... 20/21
If the CPC win the federal election they will have enough provinces, plus the federal government, to re-open the constitution and charter and take out the bits they don't like. We cannot let that happen. So, choose forgiveness. Let's move forward. #cdnpoli 21/21
