One thing that would happen if the Dems impeached and the GOP refused to convict is that the Dem base would have nobody to be mad at but the GOP. It would be clarifying, and radicalizing.
One can see why this prospect is appealing to some in Dem leadership, and unappealing for others.
And of course if impeachment failed because of moderate Dem defections, that would be clarifying too. Again, an attractive prospect for some, unattractive to others.
Oh, lord. “Nobody to be mad at but the GOP” was shorthand. I’m not saying all party divisions would end forever. I’m saying that IF the party united on impeachment, the divide between the parties would be heightened in a way that would serve some Dems’ interests and not others.
Another way of phrasing it: Between failed impeachment and squelched impeachment, which course of action is more likely to lead to mass popular action against Trump in the second half of 2020?
Would we win if we fought on that turf? I dunno. But it’s the turf some of us want to be fighting on, win or lose.
And again: I don't know whether the strategy that I prefer is a winning strategy. Anyone who tells you that the strategy they prefer is a for-sure winning strategy is making stuff up and should be discounted, if not ignored.
