A journal is threatening to take me personally to collections for an unpaid balance on a manuscript I wasn't the corresponding author on. Really? Threaten my personal credit history for unpaid work which you charge me to publish (a journal also for which I referee for free)? 😡
Not going to name the journal (as @evolscientist pointed out, it's the publisher not the journal doing this). Not going to name publisher just yet. Mostly wanted to point out how broken the academic publishing system is, and how awful it feels to be in a situation like this.
@evolscientist Thanks to everyone for the support. It makes me feel a little less sick to know there's a community out there that's just as outraged as I am.
@evolscientist Update: This got escalated to the EiC who escalated with the publisher, and it is being investigated/resolved with the publisher. It was not a breakdown in communication w co-authors, it was an aggressive accounts payable department pursuing an invoice we'd been told was paid. 1/
This is being resolved and I hope no other scientists (in particular, junior scientists and those with less power) will have to deal with this kind of ugly behavior from a reputable publisher. Maybe wishful thinking; author/editor awareness this is happening is a start. 2/
I am extremely thankful to a number of people who helped me handle this, in particular, @chngin_the_wrld who got me in touch with the EiC. The sense of community and support that I got from #AcademicTwitter has been really incredible. Thank you to everyone. 3/
If this happens to anyone else, contact me. I've learned a few lessons here. I'm happy to try to help. This kind of behavior is not okay. I was a graduate student when I worked on this paper, and even now as faculty I did not know how to fix this on my own. 4/
If this had happened when I was still a graduate student it would have been devastating. So please, reach out. /end
