I'm a little late to this whole #academia conversation / Chronicle turd about publishing in the right journals. I was busy eating knishes and honey cake. And now I'm very full of carbs but also I have thoughts.
1. Any advice column about succeeding in the academy that doesn't acknowledge the precarity that characterizes academia is missing the big picture.
2. I have not time for scholars who want to shore up their ivory towers.
3. Publish wherever you think your work will matter.
4. Some of the most exciting work is being done in venues that are not traditional mediums. I was the managing editor of one of those venues.
5. Apparently, we're damned if we don't speak to the public and damned if we do. Make up your mind, Chronicle.
6. Is the Chronicle really a prescriptivist conversation for the academic 1% and admins?
7. I ate too much honey cake on Rosh Hashana.
8. Writing across different mediums and for different audiences sharpens your ideas and your arguments. I think it's great for scholars to do so.
9. Junior scholars don't need to be scolded for being creative, entrepreneurial, and thinking publicly across multiple mediums. They need good jobs and compensation for their labor.
10. Some of the best editing I've ever received has been from non-academic venues.
FIN
Addendum. Please forgive my typos.
