The new prorogation in danger of being overlooked tonight. Risk govt will lose. So what is No 10 playing at?

Presumably part of another play at getting an election. No PM has lost a King/Queen’s Speech since 1924. If BJ does he will up pressure for conf motion/election motion.
Will *once again* limit parliamentary scrutiny, give executive some temporary breathing space, also reorder week beginning 14th October with a day of pomp and five days of speech on the speech.
Timing is critical though

we’d be looking at QS vote on 18th

Then if no deal, having to write the letter on 19th

Is he looking to lose QS vote so as not to have to write the letter...?

Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Each time, apparently without irony, that they’re each accusing the other of exactly what they’re guilty of. And they’re both right.
Both have political priorities/incentives > Brexit. But they’re both have to desperately pretend they don’t
Some truth on both sides

1) LDs/GNU types seem to forget relative size of power blocs. They forget there is only GNU because Lab is providing nearly all the votes. Not unreasonable to expect Lab Leader to lead it.

2) Swinson is right to say numbers probably aren’t there for JC

Odd things going on in Ilford South selection. Don’t know all the ins and outs of the process but interesting that decision to suspend selection was said to be a result of personal intervention for Jeremy Corbyn himself. Interesting precedent to set... labourlist.org/2019/10/ilford…
...as usually with other incidents in local parties (including some anti-Semitism controversies) Labour leader usually says he cannot intervene in local processes. Wonder if this one might come back to haunt him.

The interview Jacob Rees Mogg did with @krishgm this week at the Conservative Party Conf has aged spectacularly badly already. In it he basically rules out several of the key elements of the PM's new Brexit proposals.
@krishgm He says: "The backstop must go…But we cannot allow NI to be subject to EU rules and we cannot allow NI to be separated from the rest of the UK…to set up a completely different system would be wrong in terms of unionism but would also be wrong in terms of trade flows."
@krishgm But then I suppose this is what happens if you literally don't tell the cabinet (even your allies) what you're doing

This is a really good thread on how to defend against drones and missiles.

There are, however, a couple of comments I would like to make to emphasize some of the challenges but also highlight some more capabilities and systems we have.
First of all, there are significantly more systems, that can defend against cruise missiles, than @DuitsyWasHere includes in his thread. A couple of examples below, but that's probably not even a complete list since I am only including missile based interceptors.
@DuitsyWasHere Patriot has been discussed frequently and that system, obviously has capability to defend against cruise missiles. Now, @luke_j_obrien has written som excellent threads on the fact, that Patriot includes different interceptors, some of which are better than other.

As I have said, the PM is supposed to have confidence of Parliament - when a new PM is appointed by the #Queen, the whole point is that it has been shown he or she had confidence of Parl whether via leadership contest or election. 1)
So if the PM does not have the confidence of Parliament, then the #Queen’s position is changed - she can’t just do what he asks her to anymore. If it comes to a decision between PM and Parliament, constitutionally she has to choose Parliament
#BorisJohnson doesn’t have the confidence of Parliament and now he’s trying to force through in what is pretty much a coup. He’s putting the Queen in an untenable position. 3)

New #PA Congressional map is pretty much the best one Democrats could have hoped for. At least 2 pickups in neutral environment, likely ability to win 11 in current D+6 environment. Post coming
PA redraw creates map that is almost entirely drawn from scratch. Huge shifts from 2016 plan all over the place. Dems favored to win 9 seats there in almost any national environment.
(big swings mostly from renumbering, but aggregate differences are clear)
