1/ #UDL is a framework to help us extend learning to all students which addresses learner variability. It's also important to consider that we as humans are feeling machines that think, not the other way around.
2/ We need to design learning environments that support all students, and further we need to understand who our students are, where our students are coming from, and what our students are going through
3/ When did you know you could be successful in college #ValidationTheory
Instructor presence, or students being able to connect with instructors is vital to their ability to be successful
4/ It's important to try humanizing, before discounting the impact. Record a 60 second video on your phone and upload it to your course to add a personal touch that helps with building human connection.
5/ Sitting in the seat of the student really helps us as instructors to see how our syllabus comes across to our students. Try avoiding telling the students all the things that they shouldn't do (red language).
6/ The QUALITY of our interactions with our students is a better predictor of student performance than the QUANTITY of our interactions.
7/ Adaptive teaching includes our ability to see our online students as more than just a name on the screen. We need to see our students as real humans, who have real lives, and have real thoughts/feelings.
8/ Listening to stories fosters the increase of empathy in the listener. We should utilize story telling in our teaching to humanize our instruction and to help students cultivate a growth mindset.
9/ Instructors and students can use tools like #AdobeSpark video (which is free to use) as an easy and usable venue to create video content as a way to share stories, reflect on learning, and further humanize the online learning experience
10/ Social presence is the key to humanizing the online learning environments which has been shown to increase student satisfaction, interaction, and depth of learning.
@brocansky 11/ The importance of getting our online students opportunities to share their insights and engage in discourse with their peers can improve student perception of learning, and overall student success.
@brocansky 12/ Meaningful learning in this day in age needs to be unlocked from the confines of the LMS. Give students options and choice in the way they are demonstrating learning, and allow them to share their work with the world.
@brocansky 13/ Technology shouldn't be a barrier for us to connect with our students. We should utilize the tools available to us to make human connection, because improving social presence and showing our vulnerabilities help students to feel safe to be vulnerable in their own learning.
