Journalists: If you need an idea for a project, request the disciplinary files of every school resource officer in your state.
Start with these states, where the records are public. wnyc.org/story/police-m…
You’ll want to request all complaints reported against the officers, misconduct lawsuits, and any discipline imposed over the past, let’s say, 10-15 years. You’ll also want to know which schools the officers were assigned to (disparities between white/predominately PoC schools).
Use a platform like muckrock.com to request the files so they are posted publicly for researchers, policymakers and activists to use to inform local organizing efforts (this part is critical, too often the source data isn’t posted for projects like this).
