You’re hiring 500 new police officers to police subway stations to arrest people too poor to afford public transportation instead of spending those tens of millions on affordable housing & safer shelters. Don’t be stunned. Do something.
One thing I love about Twitter. Unexpected connections. I’ve been in conversation on DM for a bit w/ an officer out of the Bronx. Always really thoughtful. His reaction to this (☝️) tweet. My response to him in next tweet. (👇).
“What we can do: decriminalize drug possession, divert resources we spend arresting & prosecuting & treat substance disorder like what it is: a health issue. Invest in better treatment services. Better for everyone.” He agreed. Now just need him to agree to testify alongside me.

Just your daily reminder that when people I represent inadvertently miss a court date—even when as usual, nothing of substance is happening other than me asking for evidence that should have already been turned over—warrants issue for their arrest.
Right now, I’m sitting next to a young man with his arms cuffed behind his back sitting uncomfortably with 2 plain clothes warrant officers watching over him for accidentally missing a court date this past month. About to see a judge. He’s now in danger of being jailed on Rikers.
In front of judgenow. There was reason to be confused. In touch w/ his attorney. Knew court date next week. Lawyer’s colleague asking for him to remain released until date to come back as he planned. Judge wants to hear from his lawyer. Held in cells while attorney heads here.

Rape survivors, sex trafficking victims, & witnesses to violent crimes get arrested & jailed for failing to comply with subpoenas until they agree to comply.

Judges routinely set bail with no regard to ability to pay, no care for the violence people will face in jail, no concern about the enormous fiscal cost to taxpayers, no awareness of their role in contributing to the perpetuation of mass punishment.
Let me file a late amendment to the Tweet above. I would say most judges are aware in at least some ways how they contribute to mass punishment. They either are okay w/ it & view system as working how it should, or try to put it out of sight, out of mind so they can do their work

@dradambanks The entire valuation makes no economic sense. Racism is central to the sys of housing valuation (& racist allocation of communal resources.) *Plus, as a widget, it is used, deteriorating, its systems wear out, grow less efficient/obsolete over time. Why shd it increase in value?
@dradambanks Banks make more $ based on the loan amt. The reason GOp/Reagan privatized public housing was so the banks cd double dip on the financial products: a) interest on the construction loan, then b) tax write offs for capital supplied to build projects. This also adds cost btw..
@dradambanks This entire system built around housing construction, valuation, its financing is a racist based scam... and I’m saying tht as an architect in housing for 30 yrs. I see the financial proformas, the budgets. The banks and developers make out the best — not residents, tenants.

So for the last few months I have been exploring setting up a dedicated #Housing advice centre for #Suffolk. It is undeniable that due to the lack of #LegalAid provision in the county and the increase in people seeking specialist advice that a housing advice centre is desirable.
Whilst speaking to people about this a question that has been raised a number of times is “why are you not still providing specialist housing advice at @midsuffolkcab?” A good question that really does need answering so here goes.
This was me just over 7 months ago, happy #volunteering for @midsuffolkcab as a housing adviser and running a general advice outreach service at Wattisham. I was busy, the role stressful but for the most part I was throughly enjoying being part of something that I believed in.

New Gov. @BillLeeTN before speaking at the same MLK Day event as @RevDrBarber. "I think he would think we have much to do," Lee says of King. Asked about wage inequality, Lee says raising minimum wage is not "the approach," but "creating opportunity" is.
Gov. @BillLeeTN gets some applause from the audience here when he says he wants to focus on reentry programs as part of his criminal justice reform efforts. He tells the story he frequently referenced while campaigning about mentoring a teen in an urban neighborhood.
So @RevDrBarber is saying God commanded nations/government to take care of their poor, etc., not individuals, which is sort of the opposite of what @BillLeeTN says about government not solving our problems. I'm guessing he is uncomfortable sitting on stage behind Barber.
