Hey, it's getting to be that time of the year, and I know I've said it before, but I'm gonna say it again:

Don't donate to the Salvation Army. I know some of the bell-ringers are charming, but don't do it.
Donate toiletries and food (if possible) and NOTHING else.

It helps nobody.

The money gets funneled off toward "missionary" work and the clothing is mostly sold in SA thrift stores (the proceeds from which are similarly directed) alongside goods stolen from homeless people.
I wrote a whole thread on this shit before, so I'll spare you the diatribe, but the intended takeaway here is that there are better ways to help, if you want to help.

Give money to homeless people directly. Organize communal clothing swaps.
Stop with the executive tunnel vision and get involved politically at the local level. Attend city council meetings. Vote. Run for office. Advocate for things like harm reduction, sex work decriminalization, public housing, rent controls, public restrooms...
...expanded public transit. Investments in education and the arts. In community-building. In policies that make people's lives better. Demolish the speculative housing market. Put people who desire work to work, and pay them a decent wage.
Provide security for people who can't work, or for people who are getting an education or learning a tradeskill (that includes creative skills). Subsidize or provide childcare.

Expand disability benefits - nobody deserves to desperately scrape for survival on $750/month.
Cut the military budget. Tax the robber barons. Invest that money in our futures.

If we all want to wake up from this miserable, Dickensian nightmare of a world, we're going to need to put in the world and start building a better one.

So keep your donation. And grab a hammer.
Oh, and one other thing.

That "missionary" work I mentioned? It's primarily shit like this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uganda_An…

The Salvation Army's been in Uganda since 1931. United Way is there. Cru is there.
The American evangelical right is all over Africa, working tirelessly on nifty little pet projects like Uganda's "Kill the Gays" bill.

So please think about that the next time you give these people money. You're funding genocide.
Same goes for your Chick-fil-A sandwiches. They funnel money directly toward the organizations that sponsor bills like this. They incite violence and murder through the dissemination of homophobic and transphobic propaganda.
augh, damn it. Put in the work**

I meant to say work.
