I have been following this closely ever since the government contracted with Bethany Christian Services, and this same thing has happened in many other cases. This one is only rare because it was overturned.

This is literally genocide, per UN definitions.
If this capacity for cruelty is what we deem great, it’s a great testament to our depravity, because there’s nothing as perverse and disturbing as a country that voluntarily separates families and tortures and traumatizes innocent children.

Whenever I see a stately church with elevated wooden pulpits, I see a visual reminder that this church was designed to literally lift up abled people as preachers while letting physically disabled people know our place.
That place disabled people occupy in the church isn’t usually one of intentional exclusion.

It’s merely the place of not being seen, known, considered.

Or, if we are, it’s as model of ministry to us rather than ministry with or ministry by us.
I love the beauty of Duke Chapel, for example, but I avoid events there.

Having to go around back to find a ramp doesn’t feel like I’m welcome, especially when the doors often bear a sign asking for people to enter at the front because a service is in session even when it isn’t.

One reason abused children often become abused adults is that we were taught that love coexists with abuse.

Then, when someone new abuses us, we can accept that as love, never having known the real thing.
That abuse that feels like love to us because we don’t know that love and abuse are meant to go hand in hand?

Sometimes it’s from a lover or partner. Sometimes it’s from a friend. And? Sometimes it from another intimate relationship, like - for example - a religious community.
You are worthy of love, and love is not abusive.

I was 23, married a year, pregnant with our first child. I was being trained to lead a small group of middle schoolers at the church summer camp.

So was he.

He is low serving time, one of the men named in @HoustonChron database, for what he did to boys. houstonchronicle.com/news/investiga…
I didn’t know. I didn’t think any of us had known. I trusted the church version of facts.

I was never told that my small group of girls included one who had been in his Sunday school class. No one ever checked on her or talked to her about what happened because she was a girl.
She was a bit belligerent that summer.

She had good reason to be.

(She’s a dear friend now that we’re both adults, and I love her feistiness now as much as I was confused by it then.)

Bethany Christian Services, an adoption center with financial ties to Betsy DeVos, has taken 81 immigrant children who were forcibly separated from their parents. Most have had no contact with their families. They’re charging $700 per child per night.

Buried the lede?

Bethany advertised on their website that you can adopt kids from Guatemala for $50k.

Trump obligingly hands them South American kids, Bethany keeps them for a year, then goes to court and gets them labeled orphans because there is no identification of a parent.
How could there be any identification of a parent when they made no good faith effort to keep track of the parents?

In fact, they admitted to destroying some of the records that had been made that could have helped to unify these families.

(2) One of the truly horrifying things has been the lack of records associated with the zero-tolerance policy. There's been little effort to track children separated from parents & former HHS officials warned that separations might be permanent.

(3) This looks a lot like genocide. The systematic removal of children from a group is part of the UN definition of ethnic cleansing & it's been used to eradicate what some considered "inferior" races.
