There are a few completely unfounded claims that consistently arise around how #decriminalization would impact the size of the industry being repeated by @Polaris_Project @ncose & others operating in bad faith, and demonstrating an embarrassing disinterest in data. (1/ )
There are claims that there would be an explosion of the size of the industry. But lets talk abt studies: The country which has decriminalized (New Zealand) & the most recent report on a country which instituted increased criminalization through the #NordicModel (NIreland) (2/ )
NZ had studies before/after & notes the challenges w methodology. Only 1 area replicated their study exactly & after 8 yrs of decrim found an increase of 11 ppl. 17 more indoors, 6 less on the street. They also noted more visibility - which is good. (3/ ) prostitutescollective.net/wp-content/upl…
I'm going to not call an increase of 11 people, or roughly a 2.2% increase, an explosion. They make clear what the methodological changes were, but if you're going to say it'll explode and keep a straight face, didn't happen in NZ. (4/ )
The opposite assumption should also be true, then, right? When you criminalize demand, there should be a drop in demand if you logic is based on anything but yr weird hopes and dreams. Welp. Didn't happen in Northern Ireland, which looked at 3yrs post-Nordic Model intro. (5/ )
This is pretty easy for N Ireland. Findings: Didn't happen. There was actually a small "surge" in demand at first, which I could make some guesses about (my guess? market about to change? Make connections ASAP! then it dies) but who knows. (6/ ) justice-ni.gov.uk/sites/default/…
There's also a buyer "study" they keep repeating that 20% of men would buy sex if it was legal, so there will be a 20%+ in demand & you'd have to fill it with trafficking victims. Here's the obvious reason why that's bullshit & JLo expressing my feelings on the idea itself. (7/ )
Saying "I would if..." isn't the same as doing it. It's definitely not the same as having the disposable income to have the experience you want. Why haven't they gone to a brothel in NV? Because you aren't actually that driven to see a sex worker. Not all 20% would do it. (8/ )
Next, you're talking about 20% who say "I want to obey the law." - why would they seek out a trafficking victim? Why would they not find guidelines on ethical consumerism? Do their best to be *good clients* - these are probably the ones you WANT as clients. (9/ )
Lastly, raise your hand if you're a sex worker who could use more clients? Or at least more opportunities to demand more money, more boundaries, because you have a greater option to say no? (10/ )
Lets be real: If any anti-trafficking group says that there is no way for an industry to prevent trafficking through visibility, community empowerment, ethical consumerism, and labor rights - GTFO out of this field (I'm looking at you @polaris_project, bc your ED doesn't) (11/ )
Lastly: it'll make it a hub of sex tourism! 1. If no increase in the market, no it wouldn't. 2. If this were true then why wouldn't every small city with a need for economic development do it? Bc it takes more than a brothel to change a place into a tourist destination. (12/ )
They cite NV: Las Vegas is the highest arrest county per capita in the country. It's also the tourism hub of Nevada. There are 9 (I think? memory on this one) different counties with brothels legally operating. They are not the tourism hubs of Nevada. (13/ )
The state with the lowest rates of arrest (I think WY) and the state w the most narrowly defined prostitution law (VT)? NOT THE TOURISM HUBS OF THE USA. If it were simple to turn a place into a bustling capital of tourism, it woulda happened. See? easyvoyage.co.uk/travel-headlin… (14/ )
To review:
1. Decrim doesn't change the size, it changes dynamics.
2. Visibility isn't a change in the size, it's also good.
3. 20% of ppl who in theory would do a thing won't all do a thing.
4. It's not easy to turn a place into a tourist spot. Ask Santa Claus, AZ. (15/15)
