Breaking: Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will say shortly that Ireland supports a Brexit extension to January 31 2020, following a phone call with @eucopresident President Tusk
Both men “noted that it would still be possible for the UK to leave before January 31 2020 if the Withdrawal Agreement has been ratified in advance of that date.”
EU27 ambassadors will discuss the issue at 1730 CET in Brussels

Irish foreign min @simoncoveney says it was "clear" during the Brexit negotiations there wd have to be checks on goods from GB-NI. The EU wd attempt to limit those checks through the Joint Committee, he said, and checks on goods going NI-GB could be limited to export declarations

3/ “The EU has made it clear they want to minimise the impact on goods coming from GB-NI but at the same time goods coming from GB-NI will need to have some checks to ensure that the EU knows what is potentially coming into their market through Northern Ireland,”

I asked Leo Varadkar if he'd had time to digest the Labour Party Manifesto bits on the Withdrawal Agreement. Here's his response: "Whoever is in government in the UK in a few weeks time, whoever is prime minister, we will be happy to sit down with them, listen to what they say...
"and work with them, and in a hypothetical scenario if a UK government wants to talk about a customs union, with the EU, or closer alignment with the single market, that’s something we’ve always been open to, something we’d be very happy to talk to the UK government about.
"Let’s see how the election goes. What I think we can be assured of is, we can say to the people of Ireland, there won’t be a hard border between north and south, and the Common Travel Area, and everything that goes with it will be protected.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar on 16 people found on a ferry bound for Rosslare: “Of course our initial response will be a humanitarian one, to make sure those people are well and that their health is good.
“After that of course there will need to be a response that involves the gardai, because as you know human trafficking is illegal, and we’ll need to see what happens with the people who come ashore.
"They may wish to claim asylum, which they’re entitled to do, or they may wish to be returned to the safe country from which they came. We’ll need to cross that bridge when we come to it, but the initial response will of course be a humanitarian one...

Idea would be to have “short extension” till mid November to encourage MPs to debate and (EU hopes) ratify the new #Brexit deal /2
This, it is thought here, would appeal to the French who are pretty much the only EU country opposing granting the 3 month extension mentioned in PMs extension request letter. It would provide them with a ladder to climb down while .. /3

So does this mean the two men came suddenly came to a compromise solution behind closed doors? Varadkar said they’d agreed not to talk about the details (in public, one assumes) ? /2
Or, to put a more cynical hat on: is the Irish PM - who was all smiles while making his statement- determined to push back at the bogeyman image the Johnson government have bestowed on him: ‘a naysayer, waiting for new extension, hoping for second referendum/far softer Brexit’ /3
