Another in my depressingly frequent “pressure release valve tweet thread” rants....
Oh god I am SO tired (again) of fighting through train stations, cities & workplaces that forcibly remind me day after day I’m not expected to be there, not welcome (if even considered).
And so overwhelmingly tired of trying to hold my sense of dignity and safety and worth together in the face of the daily assault of all these micro (and macro) aggressions.
Tired of the emotional work of resisting the silence of the not yet disableds (especially the allies in all but action), resisting the pressure to shut up and be grateful, resisting the gaslighting of my experience, the denial of my right to want fairness and inclusion.
And yeah I know I am shouting into a void. And yeah of course I’ll keep trying to do my bit for change. Of course I’ll keep going. But no, I haven’t stopped noticing who cares. And who doesn’t even when they make the right noises.
And I’ll keep dreaming of a day when more people wake up and realise that the way our society treats disabled people is shameful. Just shameful.
And continue to be angry that I am more fortunate than many - because I can throw more money than most in my situation at my pain and my obstacles and at least partially get round them.
But mainly I’ll just keep dreaming of what a society that includes disabled people truly might be like. How incredible, how beautiful, that would be for ALL of us, disabled and not (yet) disabled.
And if you got this far - wow, thank you. Just knowing you bothered helps. Just knowing you are interested steels my resolve.
But mainly - Gonnae no do that anymore society? Gonnae just try and fix this shameful thing?
