Trudeau is up. "Canadians sent a clear message that they want parliamentarians to work on things like affordability and the fight against climate change," Trudeau says.
How will you represent Alberta and Saskatchewan? "It's extremely important the government works for all Canadians ... we're reaching out to westerners."
"I take this very seriously. We must ensure we're moving forward in ways to represent all Canadians," Trudeau says. He says building Trans Mountain is still in Canada's interest. "We will be continuing with the Trans Mountain expansion."
Trudeau says he wants to work with other parties on issues like affordability, the cost of living and climate change.
"Albertans and people in Saskatchewan have faced difficult years because of global commodity prices ... we're moving forward to solve some of those challenges but it's going to take all Canadians," Trudeau says.
*News* Trudeau will reveal his new gender-balanced cabinet on November 20.
Cabinet swearing-in ceremony will be on November 20 — and a speech from the throne will then follow at a later date.
Trudeau says they're building TMX and all the profits will be directed to green-friendly projects that will help fight climate change - nothing has changed on that file since the election.
"Canadians gave me a lot to think about on Monday ... they returned us to government but with a requirement to work with other parties. I'm going to take the time necessary to really reflect on how best to serve Canadians and work with other parties," Trudeau says.
Appealing First Nations CHRT ruling. "I've been clear. I agree with the tribunal and the need for compensation for people who've been horrific situations. This is something we're going to work on." Notes they've compensated Inuit TB survivors, Sixties Scoop and others in the past
Have you ever actually worked with the opposition - give examples. Trudeau says he worked across party lines in the last Parliament. He says there's broad consensus from "progressive parties" on things like support for people with kids, middle class tax cuts.
Asked about Senate vacancies. He says there's an independent, merit-based process. He says, yes, Liberal government will change the Parliament of Canada Act to reflect the new reality in the place.
Trudeau confirms that the first bill from his government will be to implement his new promised middle-class tax cut.
Asked about nastiness, Trudeau says too much of the campaign was focused on him. "This Parliament and this government needs to be and will be focused on Canadians."
Asked about cabinet ministers from Alberta/Saskatchewan, Trudeau says not every cabinet in history has had representation from every part of the country. He says he's having conversations with people like Calgary Mayor Nenshi and Edmonton Mayor Iveson.
(So, based on that answer, it seems like Trudeau will *not* have cabinet representation from Alberta or Saskatchewan. Which is ... different, to say the least.)
Why do you think you got wiped out in Alberta and Saskatchewan? "I'm going to have to do a lot more. Why this happened isn't the central issue. The central issue is how do we move forward in a way that responds to what Albertans and Saskatchewanians clearly expressed."
Asked about Indigenous issues. He says he's impatient too. He says the Liberals have made real progress - closed education funding gap, progress on long-term boil-water advisories - but there is still much more to do, he adds.
(I will say, Trudeau does seem to be much more conciliatory today. He seems a bit chastened by his party's major flop in Western Canada.)
On China, Trudeau says he'll sit down with the experts in the coming days who have been working behind the scenes on these issues during the election. He'll speak with new ambassador, Dominic Barton, soon.
