A reader sent me this old classic - @BillGates yelling at a bunch of MSFT execs about how bad a download experience is. I was at MSFT at the time and remember this well...

At the time, it was easy to just dunk on MSFT and Bill. But 15 years later, you observe many things

- Bill was doing what CEOs should do- pushing his teams.
- How org structure determines what you ship.
- Reluctance from any one exec to "own" what seems an unfixable problem.

If you're in any medium/big company (or even a small one), you'll eventually be pulled into a vague partner meeting. Where some partner company will bring their execs/CEO over to visit (or you go visit them). These can be confusing if you work in product/eng but they needn't be!
What makes them confusing: there are multiple stakeholders on all sides. Sales, BD, your CEO perhaps, multiple teams. Same on "their side". And it isn't clear what needs to be accomplished by either side.

I've been able to get some reading done in the last few weeks and one topic in particular: building/running organizations. A lot of them seem tied to warfare but really are about teams and projects. Some recommendations below. Will add more as I run into them.
(1) "Doing the Impossible":
Chronicles George. E. Mueller's overhaul of NASA to make Apollo possible.

I've come to now see Apollo as much as an "organizational success story" as much a science/engineering one. Mueller is a true organization genius.
(2) "Now It Can Be Told: The Story Of The Manhattan Project" - similar read but on the Manhattan Project. I thought I knew the basic outlines but this was a fascinating read.

I want to highlight a behind-the-scenes change that improves the security guarantees provided by Cloudflare’s global HTTPS service. Since last year, Cloudflare has been using a different set of session ticket encryption keys (STEKs) in each datacenter for TLS resumption.
Previously, the same key was used across multiple datacenters, rotated every hour (blog.cloudflare.com/tls-session-re…). This was modeled after work by @j4cob and @jmhodges at Twitter (blog.twitter.com/engineering/en…) with more aggressive key rotation.
This aggressive rotation of ticket keys was not something server operators had attempted at scale and it uncovered some interesting client bugs, most notably in Microsoft Schannel (blog.cloudflare.com/microsoft-tls-…).
