DHS and Cuccinelli are being deceptive in their anti-immigrant propaganda. A major aim here is to attack sheriffs elected on opposing cooperation with the Trump admin’s deportation machine. (I’d missed this from Hamed yesterday.)
The ad, moreover, exemplifies the whole problem with ICE detainer requests: They’re asking local officials to hold people when it is not justified, after arrest and not conviction. It’s the very reason why detainer holds have led to successful constitutional challenges.
(ICE detainer requests are not warrants, despite the way they’re presented. They’re just requests. And more and more, local officials are saying, “Get a warrant, or get out of my face.”)
