.@BorisJohnson is having one last push to get his Brexit deal approved by Parliament - with his fallback being a bill very like LibDems’ to hold a general election in December. No.10 officials are ringing those MPs who voted for 2nd reading of Withdrawal Agreement...
but then voted against the programme motion, the very short timetable to debate the bill, saying unless they commit in public by Monday pm to vote for the Withdrawal Agreement Bill by “mid November”, the government will introduce a bill...
very like the LibDems’ bill, to amend the Fixed Term Parliament Act and hold December election.

Speaker election 1st round. Bryant 98 Harman 72 Hillier 10 Hoyle 211 Laing 113 Leigh 12 Winterton 46 So Hillier and Leigh knocked out. Round two. #speakerelection
Hoyle still 70 votes away from the 50% of 562 votes cast, but way out in front. Bryant did better than some expected. All about second preferences now. This could be a long night
PS we are waiting ten minutes to find out if anyone else will drop out before 2nd round of voting

Can't decid whether it's worth engaging seriously with this govt 'ruling out' anything....it's an election season, and my guess is that ultimately it will depend on the result.

But some quick observations 1/thread
1. If the UK wants an extension to transition (one time, up to 2 years) then the money part must be sorted by July 1. See thread passim. that means money talks in spring next year. Politically tough. /2

2. You can already purist/hardliners like @danielmgmoylan starting to argue that a WTO-terms #brexit at the end of 2020 isn't too far shy of a barebones FTA anyway.

And if you look at the modelling and reports from @SamuelMarcLowe et al, that's right long term. BUT.. /3

Deja vu in the realm of #Brexit Extensiondom.. France digging its heels in while Germany and most other EU countries support idea of granting the 3 month extension mooted in the PMs extension request letter /1
France was the ‚hardliner‘ when it came to the extension back in April too. But then Macron was contesting European parliamentary elections against his eurosceptic rival, Marine Le Pen. He was using the Brexit extension to make a political point back home in France /2
Now too Macron is keen to flex his Mr Europe muscles. He thinks by granting only the shortest of extensions, the EU will help focus MPs minds, encouraging them to ratify the newly negotiated #Brexit deal that the majority gave a nod to on Monday night /3

EU views PMs letter accompanying his formal #Brexit extension request - saying that he doesn’t actually want an extension- as a gimmick aimed at a domestic audience. As far as EU law is concerned: a formal request from the UK prime minister, is a formal request full stop /1
EU leaders not rushing to make decisions. Instead they watch events in Westminster carefully. If their newly negotiated #Brexit deal is approved by the majority of MPs - as the PM promised them it would be - then possibly no extension will be needed OR /2
Only a short one maybe to allow for necessary legislation to be completed. If this is the case, EU leaders won’t think twice about granting this short extension. They may even approve it by writing rather than on person at an emergency #Brexit summit. Spoiler alert../3

The day after the Supreme Court judgment we need to once more think: what next?

And specifically as pretty much all UK political parties say they want a General Election (GE), are the parties being honest about this?
First a technical point: 25 working days are needed to organise a General Election

Count forward 25 working days from today... and you get 31 October. #Brexit day.

🚨 The UK now cannot hold a General Election before exit day 🚨
Of course there is the interim stage: that the Prime Minister has to go to the European Council and request a Brexit delay, something Johnson has said he will not do.

Holding an election until that extension is secured is dangerous.

In contrast to UK, there’s no sense of panic or crisis in EU regarding #Brexit - whether over the question of suspending parliament or the fact that no deal looks to leaders the most likely outcome now /1
On suspending Parliament the European Commission’s public response as ever is that it “won’t comment on the internal politics of another country” (Though sometimes it clearly does ..) /2
EU in watch and wait mode. EU leaders see no point in huddling in dark room re-thinking the backstop right now - This next act in the #Brexit drama is being played out in UK. It’s about domestic politics /3
